Brendan had just finished wrapping the last sample in cellophane and labelling it when Jensen opened the door. "Hey man! I have your samples. Not too sure about the apricot ones, but the pistachio is a winner I think!" he grinned.
"I'm looking forward to trying them," Jensen smiled. He put his briefcase down. "Did I ever actually introduce myself yesterday? I can't even remember." He shook his head, moving forward with hand outstretched. "I'm Jensen."

Walking into the chocolatier, Jensen took a long, deep breath. "Oh my god, I can't believe how good that smells," he said under his breath. He smiled at the man behind the counter. "Hello, how are you today? I'm looking for some gift baskets, do you have any samples? I know you make them fresh of course." "Hey!" Brendan grinned. "I sure do! A counter worth of samples!" He pointed to the row of baskets. "And I'm good, thanks for asking. Bit cooler today which helps. Especially working in here!"

Brendan farewelled the little old lady, quietly stuffing a box of the more expensive praline she had wanted to buy for her ailing sister but couldn't afford, into the paper bag. "You have a nice day now!"
He shook his head as he watched her make her way up the street. Her tales of living through Katrina, and her determination not to leave the home she and her husband had lived in for over fifty years, made him wonder why he had complained this morning that he had to get up and work. He was tired though; one of the staff had called in sick and he'd been tending shop all day. He was about to go out back to make himself a coffee when the door opened, and he turned around to face another customer.
( Hey man, Jake grinned. I need sweet ... tooth rotting sweet! ) |

Shannon pulled the hard metal bag from under his work bench, flipped the lid and pulled one of his cameras from the padded confines. Holding it close to his body as if cuddling a baby, he rose and re-entered the living room. "Fuck the dishes, lets go outside and play!" Wiggling the camera, Shannon smiled at Brendan.
They had had one of their increasingly frequent dinner get togethers; Brendan happily taking over their kitchen and doing what he liked best; feeding people.

"And then he said he wanted to print new posters for me," Ville said, fumbling with his lighter. "New posters, can you imagine? I doubt the guys will like that. He wants to have just me on them, and maybe a small mention of the band somewhere."
The waitress brought their coffees and Ville reached over to pluck the complimentary cookie from Robin's saucer, knowing he wouldn't mind. It was just one of all the small rituals they had already established and he did it without thinking. "Posters," he said again, shaking his head. "And flyers. And this when I was just trying to figure out what pictures to include in the booklet of the CD."
( I wouldn't like that either. ) |

Brendan sat on the park bench, amusedly watching a group of very drunk teenagers attempt to make their way through the market crowds. They weaved in and out, the wiggly line of them annoying all and sundry. He was here for one of his meetings with Jamie. He was pleased they had managed to remain friends despite their failed attempts to make things more than that.

"Brendan! Sorry I'm late - I overslept. Hazards of working such crazy hours," Jamie apologized as he slid into the seat opposite in the sleepy cafe. Actually, his and Brendan's schedules meshed, if a little oddly. By afternoon Brendan was getting off work as he often started cooking at some ungodly early hour, while at the same time Jamie was finally out of bed after his late night gigs. They met for lunch/breakfast and either knocked around together or took photos, or sometimes went back to their respective flats; Brendan to listen to Jamie's latest piece or Jamie to taste Brendan latest confection.

Jamie's jeep was a mix of colors: forest green and rust. But, thanks to his mechanic the engine purred like a kitten and Jamie wouldn't be parted from it even though he got shit from his friends who said he'd chosen the macho vehicle to make up for his lack of height. He ignored their tease, having become immune - or maybe resigned - to it out of necessity long ago. In the back he'd stowed a cooler filled with wine, beer, water, and hard lemonade - Brendan might be spoiled for choice, but Jamie wanted to be prepared. There was also a plaid blanket, his camera bag, and his favorite acoustic guitar. He brought the Jeep to a stop in front of Brendan's block of flats, grabbing the scrap of paper bearing Bren's scribbled address to confirm he was in the right place. He hit the horn, deciding to wait a few minutes. If Brendan didn't appear, then he'd go in search.

It had been a quiet day... the lull before the storm of Mardi Gras Brendan figured. He had spent the day restocking, building up their supplies for the onslaught of customers. The boss had told him to make just standard praline, so he had endured a boring day of mixing and baking the same ingredients over and over. He welcomed the ping of the store door, and smiled at the customer.
"Good afternoon," Ville said, delighted at the sound of the old-fashioned bell that was fixed to the door. He felt a childish urge to open and close the door a few more times like they'd done as kids, but supposed he was already looking odd anyway, the only black thing in a room full of golden, white, rose and light wood. He smiled back at the salesclerk and began to inspect the shelves. Interesting goodies, for sure. Nothing you could buy at your local supermarket. Of course they had their price, he noticed, looking at a price tag, neatly hand written in elegant script. Hand-made, well, that did justify it, he figured.
( And good afternoon to you ) |

Brendan swirled the thick gooey mixture. His hand ached from having worked non-stop in the window for hours on end. He was longing for a break but sunny weather had brought a lot of customers out of the woodwork and the manager wanted to make the best of the increased custom.
Jared could smell the chocolate from several storefronts away. He tipped his head back and took another whiff, smiling as his nose led the way. Mouth watering, he opened the door, stepping inside and he took another deep breath; eyes briefly shut before he started to look around at the many confections on display.

Brendan dashed along the narrow street, politely throwing 'excuse me's to passer-by's he nudged with his box of pralines. He had been told to deliver to a nearby cafe, but needed to get back to make some more for the day's trading. He muffled a 'fuck!' when he bumped into a woman. "Oh ma'am I am so sorry!" he apologized profusely.
Mia blinked a few times as she found her footing, suddenly glad her purse was hooked up over her shoulder instead of held in her hand. When the man that had hit her started apologizing Mia looked up and shook her head. "It's okay, I wasn't watching where I was going much either."

The shop wasn't that large, but a huge, sparkling clear window offered a view of the pristine interior. A movement behind the glass made Jamie glance over, another movement had him glancing again and pausing his steps as he focused on the figure inside. A big man, dressed in baker's white, with brown hair and a big strong body. A guy strong enough to toss Jamie up on top of a wall and not even strain himself. Grinning, Jamie retraced his last few steps and set the shop's bell jangling as he opened the door and stepped inside. The smell of hot sugar and nuts wafted into his nostrils as he took in a breath.
